DRESS CODE & CLASS PREPARATION
We get a lot of questions about dress code:
Why do you have one?
Can I wear leggings instead of tights?
Can I wear booty shorts over my leotard?
There are also a lot of reasons why dancers come to class out of dress code:
All my ballet clothes are dirty.
I forgot them.
I grabbed the wrong leotard.
So, it’s important to know why we have a dress code because following it benefits the student and the teacher!
The required dress code is in place to allow for maximum visibility of lines and body placement. For example, if a teacher can never see that a dancer is sticking their ribs out, then they will never learn to find the core connection that is so crucial to dance technique.
Following dress code also teaches responsibility and accountability. These attributes are important in life and extend beyond the dance world. A student that can take the time to plan and make sure they come to class in the right attire, is much more prepared for bigger responsibilities as they grow and mature.
It’s not just clothing that matters, it is footwear and hair styling, too! A dancer should be comfortable and confident in the shoes they will be performing in so they aren’t a distraction on performance day. If a student’s hair is getting in their face, it distracts from the ability to perform moves technically correct.
Showing up out of dress code for dance class is like showing up to school with no paper or pen for writing. A dancer who comes prepared demonstrates:
they want to be taken seriously
dance is important to them
they respect the instructor
they respect their classmates
they are in class to get better
If you have questions about dress code or proper hair or shoes ask your teacher! They will be happy to tell you the best way for you to get the most out of your dance training.
