MAKE THE MOST OF ONLINE DANCE CLASSES
We never thought we’d be in a place where our only and best option was to teach virtual dance classes. The joy of coming together, watching each other excel, and work together has been replaced with video calls, online classes, and feelings of isolation. However, the ability to stay connected with our dancers with the virtual classes has been an unexpectedly fulfilling experience. We would rather be with you, but we will take this for now.
We are all learning what works best in this new environment, and we want you to get the most out of the experience. Here’s some tips to make it work!
MAKE SPACE
Where you dance in your home is important. You want enough space so you don’t injure yourself or break anything in your home. Find a large space, preferably uncarpeted, where you can let loose. Be careful of slippery floors and roaming pets. Your safety is important!
FIND FOCUS
Silence any alerts or notifications on the device you are using so you aren’t distracted by texts or other messages. If the space you choose, has a door, close it so you are distracted by your family walking. Let them know you are taking class, so they know not to disturb you, too!
FUEL UP
Although these classes may be condensed, be sure to eat and hydrate before hand just like you would if you were coming to the studio. Dancing on a full or empty stomach doesn’t feel good, so listen to your body for what it needs.
DRESS THE PART
We discussed the importance of dress codes recently, but they can be helpful in a virtual class, too. Corrections in a virtual class are much harder than in person, so wearing the right clothing makes it easier for the teacher. It also help separate the time you are taking class from the rest of your time at home. The structure will help make break up the monotony of staying home.
WARM UP
Depending on the class, there may be a warm up included, but you know your body best. Do the movements and stretches that work for you to get your body ready to move.
ASK QUESTIONS
Your instructor may have their own process for taking questions, so be respectful of that. Try not to interrupt, and save your questions for the allotted time or a natural break in the instruction. Keep something nearby where you can write your questions, so you don’t forget!
COOL DOWN
Even if the class doesn’t offer a cool down, take 5-10 minutes to do your favorite stretches to prevent muscle tightness and injury.
We hope this makes the virtual class experience safe, fun, and fulfilling for you. We miss you so much, and we can’t wait to get back into the studio!
